VOLUMETRIC MASS DENSITY

MESURING VOLUMETRIC MASS DENSITY (or simply density)

three solvents

Description: Mass and volume measurement of liquids, three solvents, visually similar but very different: water, ethanol and dichoromethane - So, the student can use this interactive simulation to find the 3 densities. Possibility for the teacher to continue with the notion of relative density, compared to water therefore.

Definitions

Density (or specific mass) is mass per unit volume. The symbol most often used for density is ρ.

Relative Density: For liquids and solids, relative density, (or specific gravity), is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of water as reference material. So, its a dimensionless quantity.
